ECO-TOURISM ACTIVITIES
"Eco Tourism". With Boulder Lodge being situated beside the Ruahine Forest Park, the eco tourist has a wonderful opportunity to be introduced to New Zealand's native fauna and flora. Podocarp hardwood forests - rimu, totara, miro & matai, dominates the area with crystal, clear streams cascading from the forest.

Endemic bird life is abundant too - bellbird, tui, grey warbler and the rare NZ falcon, to name just a few that you can view in their wild and natural state.

Travers, your host, has a lifetime of experience in the native bush and mountains of New Zealand, so take the opportunity and have him introduce you to the wonderful native tree and bird life of New Zealand.

not so myself, my
home is in the wild.

WILLIAM COLENSO ADVENTURES
William Colenso is a feature of Boulder Lodge's botanical adventures.

This great man was born in Penzance, England in 1811 and came to New Zealand as a missionary-printer in 1834. He loved exploring the forest and mountains of the North Island and over the next 50 years, collected many hundreds of plant specimens, sending them back to Kew Gardens, England for identification. He is now regarded as one of New Zealand's leading botanists and explorers.

Olearia Colensoi (leatherwood) is a sub alpine shrub discovered by William Colenso and can be visited on Boulder Lodge's 4WD tour. It covers an area in the Ruahine Forest Park approximately 25km long by 2km wide which makes it the largest continuous zone in New Zealand (an absolute must to see).

You will see many more trees and shrubs on this tour bearing Colenso's name.
